RedStorm cruises past WVU-Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande enjoyed a big day at the net - both offensively and defensively - and the RedStorm cruised to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 rout of West Virginia University-Tech, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference women's volleyball action at Van Meter Gym.
The RedStorm, who won for a ninth straight time, improved to 16-6 overall and 5-0 in league play with the win.
WVU-Tech slipped to 3-20 overall and 2-3 inside the RSC with the loss.
Rio Grande finished with 45 kills and just 14 errors over 101 swings for a .307 attack percentage.
Defensively, the RedStorm registered 10 solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
The Golden Bears, on the other hand, hit just .039 for the match (26 kills, 22 errors, 103 swings) and had only three blocks.
Set one was actually tied at 15-all after a service ace by Tech's Roxana Vazquez, but Rio grabbed the early match lead by scoring 10 of the final 12 winners in the period.
Set two was also tied - at 7-7 - before the RedStorm took control with a 10-1 run, while Rio blew set three open with an 11-1 spurt that produced an 18-4 advantage.
Junior Kelli Stewart (Waverly, OH) led the winning effort with 13 kills and 12 digs, while senior Elle McLoughlin (Zanesville, OH) tallied 35 assists, four solo blocks and one block assist.
Junior Jenna Harrison (Gallipolis, OH) added 10 digs for Rio, while freshman Gracie Perkins (Wheelersburg, OH) had five solo blocks.
Aniston Treadway and Ivana Burgos had eight kills each for WVU-Tech, while Addison White and Anais Gonalez had 12 and 10 assists, respectively.
Peydon Smith had 10 digs in the loss for the Golden Bears and Eden Miller finished with two solo blocks.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday night at Indiana University Columbus. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
