Rio Grande Sports Information
PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande coughed up an early eight-point lead before righting the ship and pulling away for an easy 97-75 win over Alice Lloyd College, Tuesday afternoon, in non-conference men's basketball action at the Perry Campus Center.
Rio Grande, which snapped a four-game losing slide, improved to 6-7 with the win.
The 97 points scored also established a new season-high for head coach Ryan Arrowood's squad, eclipsing the previous high of 95, which was set in a season-opening 95-77 win over Tennessee Wesleyan.
Alice LLoyd dropped to 5-12 with the loss.
The Eagles trailed 8-0 just over two minutes into the contest, but reeled off a 24-10 run over the next eight minutes for their largest lead of the day, 24-18, following a layup by Koji Anderson with 10:04 left before halftime.
But Rio turned things around and took a lead it would never relinquish when a three-pointer by senior Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) made it 26-24 with 8:08 remaining in the half.
Robertson's go-ahead bucket was part of 14-0 Rio spurt which turned the six-point deficit into an eight-point lead and, eventually, an 11-point cushion with just under two minutes remaining before the break.
After settling on a nine-point edge at the intermission, the lead quickly reached double digits in the opening moments of the second half and reached its peak of 27 points, 80-53, after a three-pointer by freshman Brody Buchanan (Proctorville, OH) with 9:21 left to play.
Alice Lloyd got no closer the rest of the way.
Rio Grande shot 55 percent overall (38-for-69), including nine three-pointers, while outrebounding its hosts, 43-33, and committing just six turnovers.
The RedStorm had five double-digit scorers, with senior Delon McCloud (Grand Rapids, MI) leading the way with 19 points.
Senior Jaylin Fox (South Haven, MI) had 15 points, while fellow senior Jaelin Johnson (Fairmont, WV) netted 12, junior James Wright (Detrot, MI) had 11 and freshman Eli Roberts (South Webster, OH) tossed in 10.
Senior Trey Robertson (Waverly, OH) had a team-best eight rebounds and eight assists, while Wright also had eight rebounds and sophomore Bransyn Copas (Seaman, OH) and Buchanan had five assists of their own.
Rio finished with a season-high 27 assists.
Alice Lloyd connected on 10 three-pointers as a team, finishing 26-for-64 overall (40.6%) and 13-for-19 at the free throw line (68.4%).
Landon Napier led the Eagles with 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while Desmier Hatchett finished with 15 points and Anderson had 11 points and six assists.
Evin Eversole also 11 points and two steals in a losing cause for the Eagles.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when it resumes River States Conference play at Kentucky Christian University.
