RedStorm takes twin bill from Brescia

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande posted a mercy rule-shortened game one win before building a big lead in game two and holding on late for a doubleheader sweep of Brescia University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference baseball action at Kamuf Park.
The RedStorm defeated the host Bearcats by scores of 11-1 in eight innings and 11-7 to improve to 15-13 overall and 3-9 against conference foes.
Brescia finished the day at 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the RSC.
Rio Grande turned its game one victory lopsided early on, scoring three times in the second inning and five times in the third inning.
Freshman KB Perkins (Chillicothe, OH) had a two-run single and a steal of home in the three-run second, while sophomore Gregory Catano (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and freshman Jacob Kaiser (St. Marys, OH) had two-run singles in the five-run third.
Kaiser also added a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Kaiser finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored, while Perkins and Catano both finished 2-for-4 and senior Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) had a double.
Redshirt freshman Logan Martin (Wellston, OH) got the win on the mound for Rio, scattering eight hits and allowing one run over 6-2/3 innings.
Caysen Mitchell started and lost for Brescia, allowing six hits and eight runs over just 2-1/3 innings.
Koltyn Perez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bearcats, while Miguel Marcos and Grant Huebner also had two hits each and Hayden Jones doubled.
Game two saw Rio Grande score twice in the first and third innings and three times in the fifth for a 7-0 lead, only to have to survive the home team scoring seven times in their final three at bats - including five times in the seventh.
Devapalan finished 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI, while junior Joel Pagan (Humacao, P.R.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore Riley Wooldridge (Cincinnati, OH) homered. Kaiser had two hits and a run batted in, junior Caleb Asjes (Overland Park, KS) was 2-for-4 and Catano drove in a pair of runs.
Perkins earned the win on the mound despite allowing seven hits and five runs over 6-1/3 innings.
Dylan Warda started and lost for Brescia, surrendering two hits and four runs over 2-1/3 innings.
Jones had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while Marcos hit a three-run home run in the five-run seventh. Huebner was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
Weather permitting, Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Howell, Mich. for a non-conference doubleheader at Cleary University.
First pitch for the opener is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
