Rio Grande Sports Information
PEDRO, Ohio - After piling up 36 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Rio Grande on Friday afternoon, Indiana University Southeast went right back to its bludgeoning ways in Saturday morning's series finale.
The Grenadiers scored in five of their seven at bats en route to a mercy rule-shortened 12-1 win over the RedStorm in River States Conference play at Rock Hill High School.
The game site was moved due to wet grounds at Rio's on-campus Bob Evans Field and the game time was moved to 10 a.m. in an effort to beat more inclement weather forecast for later in the day.
IU Southeast had 17 hits on its way to improving to 14-7 overall and 6-0 against league foes.
The RedStorm slipped to 9-10 overall and 0-6 in the RSC with a sixth straight loss.
Rio trailed 1-0 after two innings, but the guests broke things open by scoring four times in the third inning and three times in both the fourth and fifth frames.
The Grenadiers tacked on their final run in the sixth, while the RedStorm avoided a shutout thanks to a leadoff home run by junior Joel Pagan (Humacao, Puerto Rico) in the bottom of the seventh - one of only two hits for the home team on the day.
He also Rio's other hit - a first inning infield single.
Gabe Yonto went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in for Southeast, while Coulter Hamilton was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double. Nick Johnson and Caden Lockwood also hit home runs.
Kannon Stull had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while Lockwood had two RBI and Alex Schuler tripled and drove in a run.
Brendan Whalen started and got the win for the Grenadiers, allowing one hit and fanning seven over five shutout innings.
Freshman KB Perkins (Chillicothe, OH) started and lost for the RedStorm, allowing six hits and eight runs - seven earned - over four innings.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Monday when it will complete a suspended game from February 17 at Wilberforce prior to hosting the Bulldogs in a regularly scheduled doubleheader.
The suspended game's resumption is set for 11 a.m.
