Grenadiers bomb Rio in sweep of twinbill
Rio Grande Sports Information
PEDRO, Ohio - If it seemed like Indiana University Southeast scored runs from the moment it stepped off the bus until the moment it stepped back on, it was because they did exactly that.
The Grenadiers banged out 21 hits in a 16-3 mercy rule-shortened game one win and then outslugged the University of Rio Grande, 20-17, in the back end of their River States Conference baseball doubleheader, Friday afternoon, at the Rock Hill High School field.
The games were moved from Rio's Bob Evans Field due to wet grounds.
IU Southeast improved to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in the RSC with the sweep.
Rio Grande saw its losing streak extend to five straight games, dropping to 9-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The RedStorm watched their guests roll up four big frames in the opener as IUS followed up a three-run first with four runs in both the third and fourth innings and five markers in the sixth.
Gabe Yonto hit one of four home runs for the Grenadiers and added a pair of doubles. He scored three times and drove in two.
Bryson Arnette went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in, while Coulter Hamilton was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI of his own.
Trevor Goodwin had the other IUS home run and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Kevin Moore had three hits and the duo of Caden Lockwood and Kasen Parks had two hits each. Parks also drove in a pair of runs.
Luca Sandrella started and got the win for the Grenadiers, allowing three hits and as many runs over five innings. He also fanned five.
Redshirt junior Jacob Napier (Alexandria, KY) started and lost for Rio, surrendering 12 hits and 11 runs - all earned - over just 3-1/3 innings.
Junior Caleb Asjes (Overland Park, KS) knocked in a run for the RedStorm.
In the nightcap, the bottom half of the third inning was the only portion of any frame which failed to yield at least one run.
IU Southeast scored two or more runs in six of its seven at bats and finished with 17 more hits, including four more home runs.
Arnette was 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and three RBI, while Goodwin homered, doubled and knocked in four runs.
Yonto was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Hamilton and Lockwood had two hits each. Lockwood had a double and drove in a pair of runs.
Matt Santana, Nick Johnson and Moore all added two RBI each to the winning effort.
Redshirt freshman Henry Valerio (Hilliard, OH) - the fourth of nine Rio Grande pitchers - took the loss, allowing three runs in the fifth inning after the RedStorm had tied the game at 11-11 following a six-run fourth inning uprising.
Junior Dalton Vance (Taylor, IN) had three hits and drove in three runs in a losing cause, while sophomore Gehrig Cordial (South Charleston, OH) was 3-for-3 with a home run and a run batted in.
Junior Joel Pagan (Humacao, Puerto Rico), sophomore Gregory Catano (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and freshman Jacob Kaiser (St. Marys, OH) all had two hits and two RBI for Rio, while Asjes was 2-for-3, redshirt junior Brett Haskins (Ripley, OH) had a triple and a double and sophomore Riley Wooldridge (Cincinnati, OH) drove in two runs.
Wooldridge and Catano both homered in the loss, while Vance, Pagan and junior Angel Morales (Herrera, Panama) all doubled.
Kemper Whisman, the second of six IUS pitchers, picked up the win. Alston Whitworth notched a save.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Saturday at Rock Hill.
First pitch is set for 10 a.m. as the teams try to play before more wet weather enters the area.
