Shawnee State completes sweep of RedStorm

Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Shawnee State University finished off perhaps its final visit to Bob Evans Field for the forseeable future with an extension of what it started on Friday.
The Bears, who cruised to a series-opening win on Friday, completed a series sweep on Saturday by taking a doubleheader from the University of Rio Grande, 12-0 in a mercy rule-shortened opener and 4-1 in the nightcap.
Shawnee State, which is leaving the River States Conference and the NAIA for the NCAA Division II Mountain East Conference at the close of the current school year, improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league play with the win.
Rio Grande dropped to 9-7 overall and 0-3 in the RSC with the losses.
Game one saw the Bears score three times in the second inning to grab an early lead before a seven-run fourth inning, essentially, put the win on ice.
Eli Jones went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for SSU, while Jack Amis and Jace Parnin both had two hits and three RBI. Parnin's hit total included a home run, while Amis had a triple and Nolan Austin hit a double.
Wyatt Haupt started and got his fourth win in as many decisions, tossing five two-hit shutout innings.
Freshman KB Perkins (Chillicothe, OH) started and lost for Rio Grande, allowing eight hits and seven runs over three innings.
Senior Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) doubled for one of the RedStorm's three hits.
Rio Grande was also limited to just three hits in the nightcap.
Shawnee State scored once in the first and three times in the third, while the RedStorm pushed across their lone marker in the final inning.
Amis homered and drove in two runs for the Bears, while Byson Arthur also drove in two runs and Larry Drake added two hits, including a double.
Owen Elsey got the win on the mound for SSU, allowing just one hit and fanning four over five shutout innings.
Redshirt freshman Logan Martin (Wellston, OH) started and took the loss for Rio Grande, allowing six hits and four runs - only one of which was earned - in a complete game effort.
Sophomore Carlos Mateo (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had two of the RedStorm's three hits and drove in its lone run.
Weather permitting, Rio Grande is scheduled to host Cleary (Mich.) University for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at noon.
The two teams had a four-game series wiped out by weather last month and rain is in the forecast for Tuesday.
