RedStorm take series opener from Tech

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Clayton Surrell hit a grand slam home run as part of a five-run second inning, Trey Carter allowed one earned run over 7-1/3 innings and Juan Familia hit a three-run walk-off home run in a five-run eighth inning as the University of Rio Grande defeated West Virginia University-Tech, 13-3, Friday afternoon, in River States Conference baseball action at Bob Evans Field.
The RedStorm improved to 17-29 overall and 10-12 in league play with the victory.
WVU-Tech fell to 6-25 overall and 3-15 in the RSC.

Surrell, a sophomore from Carroll, Ohio, hit his fourth home run of the season with the bases loaded to help give Rio Grande a 6-0 second inning lead.
Carter, a freshman from Wheelersburg, Ohio, threw a season-high 128 pitches, but scattered six hits and one walk in his series-opening start.
The left-hander was touched for three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but an error led to only one of the runs being earned.
Rio took an 8-3 cushion into the bottom of the eighth inning against Cameron Asbury, the last of four hurlers for the Golden Bears.
Senior Kent Reeser (Miamisburg, OH) reached on a one-out double and Surrell was intentionally walked, setting the stage for a run-scoring single by senior Jesse Watson (Las Cruces, NM).
A wild pitch plated Surrell and moved Watson to second, while a two-out intentional walk to senior Eli Daniels (Minford, OH) and another wild pitch put both runners in scoring position.
Familia, a senior from Reading, Pa., followed by hammering a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for the first home run of his Rio career, invoking the 10-run mercy rule.
Surrell finished 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Watson went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Familia also had two hits and drove in three.
Trevor Baker started and took the loss for Tech. He pitched just one inning, but allowed two hits and a run which gave the RedStorm a lead it would never relinquish.
Broedy Boyce went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in, while John Ackerman also had two hits and Doug Pollock finished with a double and two RBI..
The weekend series - and the home portion of Rio's season schedule - comes to a close on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
The RedStorm will honor its senior class in between games of the twin bill.
