Pomeroys slip past Rio women

Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - An all-to-familiar trend of late reared its ugly head again at the University of Rio Grande women's soccer team on Thursday evening.
For the third time in their last four outings, the RedStorm dominated their opponent statistically but came up short on the scoreboard.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods College made the most of its scant scoring opportunities, pushing across a second half goal and upending the RedStorm, 1-0, in River States Conference action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The Pomeroys improved to 3-7-3 overall and 2-5-2 in league play with the victory.
Rio Grande fell to 3-10-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the RSC as a result of the loss.
The setback also dropped the RedStorm into sixth place in the RSC standings, meaning that head coach Tony Daniels' squad needs a win over Brescia University in its regular season finale on Saturday to secure a spot in next week's RSC Tournament.
A loss on Saturday would strip Rio of its ability to control its own post-season destiny and force the RedStorm to hope for losses or ties by both Ohio Christian and Carlow University in their respective finales in order to qualify for the tourney.
Rio Grande finished with a commanding 28-10 advantage in overall shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal and a 7-3 cushion in corner kick opportunities, but it was a goal by SMWC's Sierra Mullins off of a touch by teammate Kaylee Lowe with 29:53 left to play that produced the game's lone score.
The RedStorm had a shot by freshman Jitske De Muijnk (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) with just over 12 minutes left that ricocheted off the crossbar and a pair of shots on goal in the final 11-plus minutes, but failed to net the equalizer.
Rio dropped to 0-3-1 in its last four outings despite outshooting the opposition in three of the four games.
SMWC net-minder Kaylee Thaler had nine saves in a clean sheet effort.
Freshman Aina Lopez (Barcelona, Spain) had three saves in the loss for Rio Grande.
The RedStorm's Senior Day meeting with Brescia on Saturday is set for a noon kickoff.
