Celtics rally to tie RedStorm women

Rio Grande Sports Information
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - It was the University of Rio Grande which started out fast.
Unfortunately, it was host Carlow University that finished strong.
The RedStorm jumped to a 2-0 first half lead, but the Celtics rallied for a pair of second half markers to forge a 2-2 tie in Thursday afternoon's River States Conference women's soccer matchup between the two teams at Highmark Stadium.
Rio Grande finished the day at 3-8-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.
The deadlock also left the RedStorm in fifth place in the league standings with three games still to play. The top six teams qualify for the upcoming RSC Tournament.
Carlow moved to 5-6-2 overall and 1-4-2 against RSC foes.
Rio took a 1-0 lead just 12:48 into the match when senior Lyndlee Willis (Wheelersburg, OH) beat Carlow goal keeper Elizabeth Knight in a 1-v-1 situation from the left side of the 18-yard box after collecting a crossing pass from Carmen Morris (Lancaster, OH).
The advantage grew to 2-0 just under 11 minutes later when junior Sophie Adams (Manchester, England) took a touch from freshman Jitske De Muijnk (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) and lofted a shot over Knight's head and into the back of the net.
The Celtics cut the deficit in half with 30:21 remaining in the contest when Haley Huber found the lower left side of the goal off a pass from Natalie DiGiorno and netted the tying marker on a penalty kick by Erin Thompson with 17:31 left to play.
Carlow had the only other shot on goal in the match, but Huber's attempt with 2:29 on the clock was stopped by Rio freshman net-minder Aina Lopez (Barcelona, Spain).
Rio Grande finished with a 16-10 edge in shots overall and a 9-7 advantage in shots on frame. Both teams had two corner kick opportunities.
Lopez finished with four saves for the RedStorm.
Knight was credited with seven stops for the Celtics.
Rio Grande will conclude its weekend road trip on Saturday when it faces Point Park University - also at Highmark Stadium - in an 11 a.m. kickoff.
