RedStorm splits with rival Shawnee State

     WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande scored once in each of its first five at bats and went on to post a 5-3 game two win and earn a split with rival Shawnee State University, Sunday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at Doc Singleton Park.
     The RedStorm, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped in a 5-2 loss in the opener, finished the day at 20-11 overall and 13-5 in conference play.
     The split left Shawnee State at 19-7 overall and 14-4 against RSC foes.
     Sophomore Emily Lane (Charlotte, N.C.) was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run batted in for Rio in the victory, while junior Kendyl Moss (Cincinnati, OH) also was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and freshman Macy Kise (Milford Center, OH) drove in two runs.
     Freshman Adelyn Wolfe (Lancaster, OH) added a double to the winning effort.
     Senior Meg McCallum (Belmont, Ontario, Canada) went the distance in the pitcher's circle for the RedStorm, allowing seven hits and three runs - two earned - with three walks and a strikeout.
     Gabby McConnell started and lost for the Bears, who are coached by former Rio Grande head coach Kristen Bradshaw. She allowed two hits, two walks and two runs over 1-1/3 innings.
     Jenna Christopher was 2-for-4 with a triple in a losing cause for SSU, while Gabby Adams - who transferred from Rio Grande to Shawnee State at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign - also had two hits.
     In game one, the host Bears erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring twice in the bottom of the third before tacking on a par of insurance markers in the home sixth.
     Adams and Haley Myers both had two hits and two RBI in the win, while Sydney Skiver was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Sierra Dunnagan was 2-for-4 with a double.
     Freshman Gabby Henry (Williamsport, OH) was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Rio Grande, while Moss and junior Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) also had two hits each. Reck's hit total included a double.
     Kise took the loss in the circle for the RedStorm, allowing 11 hits and five runs - four earned - in a complete game effort.
     Abbie Deeds went the distance for Shawnee State, also allowing 11 hits and a pair of unearned runs.
     Rio Grande is set to return to action on Friday when it hosts Brescia University for another RSC twin bill.
     First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rio Softball Park.
