Rio's Wolfe devours Pomeroys

Rio Grande Sports Information
ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - Safe to say that Friday afternoon's River States Conference softball doubleheader between the University of Rio Grande and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College was an example of the host Pomeroys being thrown to the wolves.
Or in the case, to the Wolfe.
Adelyn Wolfe hit three home runs and drove in five runs to fuel the RedStorm's 9-5 game one win, while going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in a 9-3 game two triumph at the SMWC Softball Field.
Rio Grande improved to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play as result of the sweep, rebounding from a rare home sweep at the hands of Oakland City University last Saturday.
SMWC dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-4 against RSC foes.
Wolfe, a freshman from Lancaster, Ohio, entered the day with just seven hits - only two for extra bases - and one run batted in for the season before becoming the first Rio player to hit three homers in one game since Haley Gwin turned the trick in a win over Lasell (Mass.) College on March 19, 2013 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Wolfe homered in the second inning of the opening game to break a 1-1 tie, then hit a three-run bomb to fuel a five-run third inning and then added another solo blast in the seventh.
Junior Kendyl Moss (Cincinnati, OH) had two hits and drove in two runs in the win, while junior Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) doubled and drove in a run and freshman Gabby Henry (Williamsport, OH) added a double of her own.
Freshman Macy Kise (Milford Center, OH) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing five hits and four runs - three earned - with four walks and five strikeouts over five innings.
Lanna Martinez started and lost for the Pomeroys, allowing seven hits and seven runs over 2-1/3 innings.
Kyar McVey and Audrey Schau had two hits each for SMWC, while Libby Jaynes drove in a pair of runs and Bailey Duke had a double and a run batted in.
The nightcap saw the host Pomeroys take a 2-0 first inning lead before Rio Grande pushed across six runs in the second and two more markers in the fifth to turn the game lopsided.
Wolfe had a two-run double in the fifth inning and added an RBI single in the seventh.
Freshman Brynlyn Denny (Jackson, OH), sophmore Emily Lane (Charlotte, NC), Moss and senior Meg McCallum (Belmont, Ontario, Canada) all contributed run-scoring hits in the six-run second inning.
McCallum, Reck and Lane all joined Wolfe with two hits each. McCallum and Reck's efforts included a double each.
McCallum got the win as a pitcher, allowing nine hits and three runs in a complete game effort.
Jasmine Kinzer started and lost for SMWC, allowing eight hits and as many runs over five-plus frames.
McVey had two hits and Duke doubled in the loss.
Rio Grande will complete its four-game weekend road swing on Saturday at Indiana University Southeast.
First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for noon.
