Rio sweeps Midway in home opener

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande flexed its offensive muscles in game one and used strong pitching in game two to sweep a doubleheader from Midway University, Friday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at Rio Softball Park.
     The RedStorm, who were playing at home for the first time, took the opener by a score of 9-6 and posted a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
     Rio Grande improved to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in league play as a result of the two wins.
     The visiting Eagles finished the day at 4-10 overall and 3-3 in the RSC.
     In the opener, Rio Grande rallied from deficits in each of the first three innings before taking the lead for good with a three-run fourth and adding an insurance marker in the fifth.
     Junior Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in for the RedStorm, while sophomore Lindzie Runions (Poca, WV) and freshman Brynlyn Denny (Jackson, OH) both had two hits and drove in a run. One of Denny's hits was a double.
     Junior Kendyl Moss (Cincinnati, OH) finished 2-for-2 with a double and freshman Macy Kise (Milford Center, OH) drove in three runs.
     Freshman Meredith Pieratt (Eaton, OH) got the win in relief, allowing just two hits and a walk over 3-1/3 scoreless innings.
     Alli Jones started and took the loss for Midway. She allowed 11 hits and nine runs - four earned - over 4-1/3 innings.
     Karington Briscoe went 3-for-5 to lead the Eagles in a losing cause, while Randi Delong was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Molly Wooldridge also had two hits, including a double.
     In the nightcap, Rio Grande managed only three hits but scratched together single runs in four different innings.
     Kise kept Midway in check in the pitcher's circle, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run.
     Reck finished 2-for-2, while Denny and senior Natalie Bates (Vandalia, OH) drove in one run each.
     Madison Hill had two hits for Midway, while Wooldrdige doubled and Delong drove in a run.
     Breanna Beach started and lost for the eagles, allowing a hit, three walks and a pair of unearned runs over three innings.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Oakland City University in a rematch of last year's RSC Tournament Championship.
     First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
