Ogden tosses no-hitter as Rio splits with Oaks

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Madi Ogden threw the University of Rio Grande's first no-hitter in more than seven years, leading the RedStorm to a game one win and a doubleheader split with Oakland City University, Thursday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at the East Gibson Girls' Softball League Field.
Rio Grande posted a 4-0 victory in the opener, while the host Mighty Oaks won the nightcap, 6-1.
The RedStorm finished the day at 33-9 overall and 21-5 in the RSC.
The split left Oakland City at 22-14 overall and 18-10 against league foes.
Ogden, a senior from Williamsburg, Ohio stole the show in the first game of the twin bill - both in the circle and at the plate.
In the circle, she walked two and struck out 10 while authoring the program's first no-hitter since Kelsey Conkey turned the trick against No. 13 Ottawa (Kan.) on March 11, 2018 in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association NAIA Leadoff Classic.
At the plate, Ogden drove in all four of the game's runs with a three-run sixth inning home run to snap a scoreless tie and a seventh inning RBI.
Junior Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had three of Rio's five hits in the win.
Madison Shipley was the hard-luck loser for Oakland City, allowing five hits and four runs while walking three and fanning nine in a complete game effort.
In the nightcap, Rio Grande took a 1-0 fourth inning lead on a solo home run by junior Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) before the Mighty Oaks responded with the tying run in bottom of the inning, three more runs in the fifth and two additional markers in the sixth.
Kasey Wood homered to tie the game and had a two-run triple in the three-run fifth. Shipley and Kinsly Heichelbech hit solo home runs in the sixth to set the final score.
Heichelbech finished 3-for-3 with a home run and a double, Wood was 2-for-4 with a homer and a triple and Hannah Wissel had two hits for Oakland City.
Gabby Countryman and Emma Williams both had a double in the winning effort.
Paige McDaniel allowed eight hits and the one run in a complete game performance for the win.
Sophomore Sammi Speakman (Jefferson, OH) started and lost for Rio Grande, allowing five hits and three runs over four innings.
Adams and sophomore Maddie Engler (Crestline, OH) had two hits each for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday, when it wraps up the weekend road swing at Brescia University.
