Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Madi Ogden pitched and hit herself to a game one win, while Kayla Sedgwick and Lindzie Runions drove in two runs each in game two as the University of Rio Grande posted a doubleheader sweep of Midway University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference softball play at Rio Softball Park.
The RedStorm posted wins of 1-0 and 7-4, pushing their season mark to 28-8 overall and 16-4 against RSC foes.
Midway headed home at 12-26 overall and 7-17 in the league.
Ogden, a senior from Williamsburg, Ohio, tossed a three-hit shutout and fanned 10 in the game one victory, which took just 69 minutes to complete.
She also accounted for the game's lone run in the home sixth.
Freshman Delana Landefeld (Williamsport, OH) singled with one out, moved to second on a two-out walk to sophomore Maddie Engler (Crestline, OH) and scored on Ogden's subsequent single to left-center.
Rio Grande had just three hits of its own against Midway starter Athena Grimley, two of which came in the scoring sixth inning.
Grimley walked just one and had no strikeouts in her complete game effort.
The back end of the doubleheader saw the visiting Eagles take a 1-0 first inning lead before the RedStorm sandwiched a two-run second and a two-run fifth around a third inning run for a 5-1 lead.
Midway scored a sixth inning run, but Rio Grande countered with two more runs in the home sixth to, essentially, put the win on ice.
The Eagles scored twice in the seventh inning to set the final score.
Sedgwick, a junior from Richwood, Ohio, doubled home the two second inning runs, while Runions - a freshman from Poca, W.Va. - had run-scoring singles in the third and fifth.
Junior Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) and sophomore Nigella Reck (Covington, OH) both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the winning effort. Reck's hit total included a double.
Junior Meg McCallum (Belmont, Ontario, Canada) went the distance in the pitcher's circle for Rio, allowing six hits and the four runs - only two of which were earned - while striking out three.
Alexia Hoskins started and took the loss for Midway, allowing seven hits and three runs over three innings.
Tenley Gilbert led the Eagles offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Ryann Berger also had a double and Kennadi Thompson drove in a run in a losing cause.
Rio Grande is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Indiana University Southeast in a twin bill rescheduled from Friday due to inclement weather.
First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
