RedStorm takes two from Crimson Pride

     COLUMBUS, Ind. - One win came rather easily.
     The other? Not so much.
     But when all was said and done, the University of Rio Grande got the sweep it desparately needed.
     The RedStorm rolled to a mercy rule-shortened 13-0 rout of Indiana University-Purdue University-Columbus in game one and held on late in game two for a 9-8 triumph over the Crimson Pride, Friday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at CERAland Park.
     Rio Grande pushed its record to 20-10 overall and 12-6 in league play.
     IUPUC dropped to 8-16 overall and 6-10 in the RSC.
     Game one saw Rio score in each of its first four at bats, including six times in the first inning and four times in the fourth.
     The RedStorm tallied 10 hits against Crimson Pride pitching, while also being the beneficiary of eight walks and three IUPUC errors.
     Junior Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) led the offensive onslaught, going 3-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in.
     Senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) had two hits and two RBI in the winning effort, while junior Boo Sturgill (Wheelersburg, OH) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
     Senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) doubled and drove in three runs for Rio, while junior Madison Ogden (Williamsburg, OH) drove in a pair of runs.
     Ogden also earned the win in the pitcher's circle, scattering three singles and three walks while striking out 11.
     Erica Henry started and lost for IUPUC, allowing six hits, seven walks and nine runs over three innings.
     In the nightcap, Rio Grande scored three times in the first inning and had back-to-back two-run innings in the third and fourth frames to open up an 8-1 fifth inning lead.
     The Crimson Pride scored three times in the fifth inning and added four unearned markers in the sixth to close the deficit to one, but couldn't complete the comeback.
     Brisker finished 3-for-5 with a home run and a double, while Ogden also had three hits, including a home run.
     Sophomore Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) had two hits - including a double - and two RBI, while Sturgill was 2-for-4 with a double, sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) drove in a pair runs, junior Megan Bazler (Portsmouth, OH) had a solo home run and Carnahan had a double.
     Senior Sydney Campolo (New Lexington, OH) started and got the win, allowing three hits, two walks and four runs over five innings.
     Ogden worked a perfect seventh inning, with a pair of strikeouts, to record a save.
     Sydney Owens started and went the distance in the loss for IUPUC.
     Macy Hussung was 2-for-3 with four RBI for the Crimson Pride, including a three-run home run in the four-run sixth.
     Morgan Stieneker also had two hits, including a double, in a losing cause, while Mallory Shelton doubled and drove in two runs.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at defending RSC champion St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
     First pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m.
