RedStorm splits twin bill with Point Park

     PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Gabby Adams had a pair of doubles and drove in a run, while Madison Ogden fired a three-hit shutout to lead the University of Rio Grande in a 2-0 game one win over Point Park University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at Fairhaven Park.
     The host Pioneers salvaged a split of the twinbill by posting a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap.
     The split left the RedStorm at 13-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.
     Point Park finished the day at 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the RSC.
     Adams, a sophomore from Grove City, Ohio, tacked on a sixth inning insurance marker in the opener with a run-scoring double.
     Rio Grande had snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth thanks to an RBI hit by senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH).
     Ogden, a junior from Williamsburg, Ohio, allowed three hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in a complete game effort for her seventh win in nine decisions.
     She worked out of scoring threats in the first, second and sixth innings, stranding four runners in scoring position.
     Ogden and sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) each had a double in Rio's winning effort.
     Mara Iagnemma had two of Point Park's three hits and Savannah Lee had the other with a double.
     Jaylyn Mullenax went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers and saw her season record drop to 2-6 with the loss.
     Game two saw Rio Grande collect 10 or more hits and score just one run for the second time in a week.
     The RedStorm outhit their host, 12-11, but managed just one run on a fifth inning homer by Adams.
     Point Park scored single runs in each of the first three innings before adding a pair of fourth inning markers and never trailed.
     Lee had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for PPU, while Hayley O'Neil went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Sydnie Reese was 2-for-4 with a double.
     Kristyna Mala also had two hits in the winning effort for the Pioneers.
     Lee (4-4) also earned the win in the circle, despite allowing the 12 hits in a route-going performance. She walked one and fanned three.
     Senior Sydney Campolo (New Lexington, OH) started and suffered another rough outing for Rio Grande, allowing 10 hits and five runs - four earned - over just 3-1/3 innings.
     Brisker had three hits, including a double, for the RedStorm, while Adams, freshman Maddie Engler (Crestline, OH) and sophomore Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) all had two hits each.
     Ogden and sophomore Natalie Bates (Vandalia, OH) each had a double in the loss for Rio.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Friday when it hosts Alice Lloyd College for a River States Conference twinbill in the opening portion of an eight-game homestand.
     First pitch for game one at Rio Softball Park is set for 2 p.m.
