Rio Grande Sports Information
CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio - Madison Ogden and Hannah Beers both tossed one-hit shutouts to lead the University of Rio Grande in a sweep of Ohio Christian University, Thursday afternoon, in River States Conference softball action at the OCU Softball Complex.
The RedStorm posted a 6-0 win in the opener, while earning a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap, which was called after five complete innings due to rain.
Rio Grande improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the RSC as a result of the sweep.
The host Trailblazers fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Ogden, a junior from Williamsburg, Ohio, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of game one before surrendering a leadoff single to left by Lexi King.
She retired each of the next three batters in order, though, to nail down the victory.
In addition to the one hit allowed, Ogden hit a pair of batters and struck out five for her sixth win in eight decisions.
Offensively, Rio Grande pushed across single runs in the second and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead and then iced the win with three sixth inning markers and a run in the seventh.
Senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and sophomore Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) was 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
Ogden also helped her own cause with a pair of hits, including a double, and sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had a double and a run batted in.
Hilarie Spitler started in the pitcher's circle for OCU and went the distance in the loss.
In game two, the only hit that the host Trailblazers managed against Beers came on a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth by Vanessa Metcalf.
Beers, a junior from Springfield, Ohio, retired each of the next two batters to end the inning.
Rio Grande came to bat in the top of the sixth and freshman Maddie Engler (Crestline, OH) led off with a single, but the field was cleared moments later due to lightning in the area and - after a delay of less than an hour - the game was called after the subsequent thunderstorm left the field unplayable.
Beers walked one and struck out one en route to her third win in five decisions.
Carnahan gave Rio Grande a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run home run to right-center, while junior Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) had a run-scoring hit in the fourth inning to account for the game's remaining run.
Hannah Burton started and took the loss for Ohio Christian in the nightcap.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a doubleheader at Point Park University.
First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
