Rio Grande Sports Information
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Hannah Beers and Megan Ogden teamed for a two-hit shutout of the University of Northwestern Ohio, while a late comeback against No. 3-ranked University of the Cumberlands fell short as the University of Rio Grande wrapped up play in the Ice-Burg Classic, Sunday afternoon, at the UC Softball Complex.
The RedStorm posted a 4-0 win in their opener against UNOH, while the host Patriots held on for a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
The split left Rio Grande at 7-3 for the season.
In game one against the Racers, Beers - a junior from Springfield, Ohio - allowed one hit and two walks over five scoreless innings. Ogden, a junior from Williamsburg, Ohio, allowed one hit over the final two frames.
Both struck out three batters.
Rio got all the offense it would need in the opening inning when senior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) led off with a triple and scored moments later on a wild pitch.
The RedStorm tacked on two more runs in the third thanks an error and a sacrifice fly by senior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH)), while Ogden added a sacrifice fly of her own in the fourth to complete the scoring.
Brisker and sophomore Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) had two hits each in the win.
Carlie Hanes started and took the loss for UNOH, allowing five hits and four runs - two earned - over four innings.
In game two, Rio Grande trailed 5-0 heading into the top of the seventh, but made things interesting by scoring three times.
Junior Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) led off with a walk and was replaced at first by freshman pinch-runner Trinity Davis (Hartsville, S.C.).
Carnahan followed with a single down the left field line which moved Davis to second, before sophomore Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) and Sedgwick were both retired routinely.
Brisker followed with a single to left and, on the same play, all three runners advanced a base on error to make it 5-1.
Beers pinch-ran for Carnahan as Cumberlands brought on a new pitcher in Morgan Radford and Maddie Engler followed with a walk to load the bases.
Radford was then lifted in favor of Lindsey Shope, who wrapped up the win by inducing sophomore Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) to hit a liner to center field in which Amber Gainer made a sensational diving catch to rob Adams of what would've been a go-ahead hit.
Engler finished 2-for-3 in the loss for Rio.
Ogden went the distance in the pitcher's circle for the RedStorm, allowing 10 hits and five runs.
Talli Burgess started and got the win for UC, while Shope earned a save.
Jade Gainer went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Patriots, while Amber Gainer was 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
Aniyah White was 2-for-3 in the winning effort, Makenzie Keatts drove in two runs and Amber Atkins added a double.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action with a four-game weekend series beginning on Friday at No. 4-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College.
