PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande parlayed a two-out, extra inning rally into a game one win, while freshman Gabby Adams fueled a game two rout as the RedStorm swept a River States Conference softball doubleheader from Alice Lloyd College, Monday afternoon, at Reeve Softball Field.
Rio scored four times in the eighth inning for a 5-1 victory in the opener of the twin bill, while Adams had three hits and drove in a career-high six runs in a mercy rule-shortened 13-2 win over the host Eagles in the nightcap.
Rio Grande finished the day at 16-10 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Alice Lloyd fell to 5-13 overall and 1-7 against RSC foes.
Rio took a first inning lead in the opener thanks to a run-scoring single by Adams (Grove City, OH), but the Eagles knotted things up in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Aspyn Branham.
That's how things stayed until the RedStorm erupted for four eighth inning runs.
Freshman Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) and junior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) opened the inning with consecutive singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Adams.
Freshman Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) followed with a flyball to center field which was dropped for error, allowing Sedgwick scored the go-ahead run, Brisker to advance to third and Perry to end up at second.
Sophomore Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) then doubled to right-center to make it 4-1, before crossing the plate herself moments later on a double to left by junior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH).
Sedgwick finished with two hits in the win, while junior Sydney Campolo (New Lexington, OH) earned the win in the circle by scattering five hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Baylee Cox started and took the loss for ALC, allowing six hits, five walks and five runs - four earned - over 7-1/3 innings.
Lyndsey Adkins and Maleigh Mcdaniel each had a double in a losing cause for the Eagles.
Game two proved to be significantly less dramatic.
Rio Grande scored three times in the first inning before Alice Lloyd countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but the RedStorm turned the contest into a rout with 10 unanswered markers - two in the second inning and four in both the third and fifth innings.
Adams had a two-run double in Rio's three-run first, an RBI single in the two-run second and a three-run home run in the four-run fifth.
Sophomore Boo Sturgill (Wheelersburg, OH) finished 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in, while senior Christen Risner (Wheelersburg, OH) went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and a run batted in.
Perry also had three hits, including a double, in the RedStorm's 18-hit attack, while Carnahan was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Brisker had two hits and a run batted in and Sedgwick doubled and drove in two runs.
Junior Kali Brickman (Huber Heights, OH) earned her fifth straight winning decision in the pitcher's circle, allowing four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Mcdaniel started and lost for Alice Lloyd, allowing 12 hits and eight runs over 2-2/3 innings.
Mckenzie Orfield had two hits in the loss for the Eagles, while Adkins doubled and drove in a run.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday afternoon when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Carlow University in another RSC doubleheader.
