NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Rio Grande rebounded from a tough game two loss on Saturday and posted a pair of wins on Sunday as part of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at the Ripken Experience Complex.
The RedStorm posted a mercy rule-shortened 14-0 win over Fitchburg State, before rallying late to post an 8-5 triumph over Mount Aloysius College in the nightcap.
The sweep of the split twinbill left head coach Chris Hammond's squad with a season record of 6-8.
The opening game win over Fitchburg State (1-8), an NCAA Division III school, saw Rio score multiple runs in each of its four at bats. A six-run second inning followed a two-run first and preceeded consecutive three-run frames.
Junior Kali Brickman (Huber Heights, OH) tossed a four-hit shutout to collect her first win of the season.
Junior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) finished 3-for-3 with a home run, double and five runs batted in, while sophomore Peyton Young (Mt. Orab, OH) doubled and drove in three runs.
Freshman Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) finished 2-for-2 with a run batted in, while freshman Lexi Thompson (Shelby, OH) and sophomore Alexandria "Boo" Sturgill (Wheelersburg, OH) also had two hits each. Thompson's hit total included a double.
Freshman Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) and freshman Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) both doubled and drove in a run in the winning effort.
Sarah Cahill started and took the loss for the Falcons.
In the second game of the day, Rio Grande scored once in the sixth inning and four more times in the seventh to erase a 5-3 deficit.
Thompson had an RBI single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh, while Sturgill and junior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) also drove in runs in the seventh inning rally.
Brisker, Carnahan and Adams all had two hits in the win, while Perry had two RBI.
Junior Sydney Campolo (New Lexington, OH) got the win in the circle, allowing 10 hits and just one earned run in a complete game effort.
The RedStorm are scheduled to face Mansfield (Pa.) University and the University of Scranton (Pa.) on Tuesday.
