RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Cumberland University had a good night at the net and pulled away midway through each set for a 3-0 triumph over the University of Rio Grande, Friday night, in River States Conference men's volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The Phoenix improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in league play with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 victory.
Rio Grande, which fell for a fourth straight outing, dropped to 8-6 overall and 1-4 in the RSC.
The RedStorm finished the night with a .000 attack percentage, tallying as many errors (26) as they had kills (26) over 86 total attacks.
Cumberland finished with 34 kills and 11 errors over 74 attacks for a .311 swing mark.
The Phoenix trailed early in all three sets, but enjoyed spurts near the midway points of all three periods to take control.
Set one was knotted a 7-7 before the visitors reeled off five of the next six winners to go in front for good.
Rio Grande led 10-9 in set two before the Phoenix scored five straight to take a lead it would never relinquish and set three was also deadlocked at 7-all prior to an 8-3 Cumberland run.
Nage Hendrickson had nine kills and Abdallah Roshdy was credited with 31 assists in the winning effort.
Alexander Heuer had 11 digs for CU and Joao Infante had three solo blocks and a block assist.
Sophomore Daniel Rivas (Valle Del Cauca, Colombia) had 13 kills, while sophomore Camilo Murillo (Cali, Colombia) totaled 16 assists, seven digs and three service aces in the loss for Rio Grande.
Senior Josef Iten (Sacramento, CA) had a solo block and a block assist for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 4-ranked Campbellsville University.
