RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Perhaps there's some credence to the adage that it's hard to beat the same team three times in the same season.
Unfortunately, it was a lesson that the University of Rio Grande men's volleyball team learned the hard way on Tuesday night.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods College avenged a pair of regular season losses to the RedStorm by defeating head coach Nick Rawls' squad 25-21, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18 in the quarterfinal round of the River States Conference Championship at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The fifth-seeded Pomeroys improved to 26-9 with the win and punched their ticket to Friday's semifinals and a date with top-seeded - and defending national champion - Georgetown College.
Rio Grande, the No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament, finished its most successful season at 16-13.
The RedStorm erased an early deficit by hitting .500 in set two and evening the match, but the visitors dominated each of the final two stanzas at the net.
SMWC tallied a .370 swing percentage over sets three and four, while Rio hit just .072 over the same period.
Bentley Meyer led the Pomeroys' balanced attack with nine kills, while Michael Olak had 28 assists and Trevin Matsuba totaled 11 digs.
Charlie Harr came off the bench to record two solo blocks and four block assists over the final two sets, while Yammiel Martinez and Joseph Szadorski had five block assists each.
SMWC finished with a .235 attack percentage for the match with 40 kills and 17 errors in 98 swings.
Rio Grande finished the match with a .191 attack percentage (50 kills, 29 errors, 110 swings).
Senior Daniel Bedoya (Acacias, Colombia) led the RedStorm with 22 kills, while junior Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 40 assists and freshman Maaz Khan (Peshawar, Pakistan) finished with 17 digs.
Senior Cam Griffith (Columbus, OH) added four block assists in a losing cause.
