RedStorm clips Eagles in straight sets

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande pulled away late in set one, midway through set two and never trailed in set three for a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-13) victory over Midway University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conferene men's volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
     The host RedStorm improved to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the victory.
     Midway dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the RSC as a result of the loss.
     The Eagles led 21-20 late in the opening period after a kill by Steven Tippenhauer and an attack error by Rio senior Daniel Bedoya (Acacias, Colombia), but the RedStorm scored five of the final six winners to grab an early match lead.
     Set two was deadlocked at 10-all after a kill by Midway's Jose Conde, but Rio Grande scored five straight points - including three consecutive service aces by senior Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH) - to take a lead it would never relinquish on the way to a commanding match advantage.
     The RedStorm put the win on ice early in set three, racing to a 4-1 advantage out of the gate and maintain the cushion throughout.
     Rio finished with a .321 attack percentage, tallying 42 kills and 15 attack errors in 84 total swings.
     Sophomore Otavio Tonoli (Campinas, Brazil) led the RedStorm with 11 kills, while Bedoya added 10 of his own and freshman Camilo Merillo (Cali, Colombia) finished with 28 assists.
     Freshman Maaz Khan (Peshawar, Pakistan) added 15 assists and senior Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH) had three block assists in the winning effort.
     Midway finished with just two more kills (22) than it had attack errors (20) and tallied a .028 swing percentage.
     Jaden Alston and Jai'Den Chinnis had six kills each for the Eagles, while Jordan Daily had 12 assists and six digs.
     Lincoln Anderson also had six digs in a losing cause, while Chinnis added three block assists.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Friday when it entertains St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in another RSC matchup.
     First serve for the junior varsity game is set for 4:30 p.m., with the varsity match slated for a 7 p.m. start.
