Rio overcomes slow start, rolls Red Wolves

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande overcame a delayed start - and a slow start of their own - to snap a four-match losing streak and defeat Indiana University East 25-23, 25-13, 25-19, Friday night, in River States Conference men's volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
     The RedStorm improved to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the win.
     IU East, which arrived just 15 minutes before the scheduled start time due to travel issues, dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-5 against RSC foes as a result of the loss.
     The Red Wolves hung tough early and found themselves tied at 22-all in the opening set after a service error by Rio senior Daniel Bedoya (Acacias, Colombia) , but the RedStorm scored three of the final four winners in the stanza to grab the early match lead.
     Rio Grande maintained its momentum in set two, scoring the first five points of the period and leading by as many as 12 points on five different occasions.
     The RedStorm also controlled set three, trailing only once at 2-1 and leading by as many as eight points late in the set.
     Rio Grande hit .545 with 13 kills and just one error in 22 attacks during set two and finished the match with a .277 attack percentage (36 kills, 13 errors, 83 swings).
     Bedoya led the RedStorm with 14 kills and two service aces, while freshman Camilo Murillo (Cali, Colombia) had 29 assists and freshman Maaz Khan (Peshawar, Pakistan) finished with 12 digs.
     Senior Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH) had two service aces as well, while senior Cam Griffith (Columbus, OH) had four block assists.
     IU East hit just .055 for the match with 25 kills and 20 errors in 91 attacks.
     Arthur Barreto had seven kills and two service aces for the Red Wolves, while Britian Givens had 16 assists and Francis Rivera Agosto had nine digs.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Midway University in another RSC affair.
