Barons batter RedStorm, sweep twin bill

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Brewton-Parker erupted for 31 runs and 22 hits over the course of two games and finished off a weekend sweep of the University of Rio Grande by taking a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the RedStorm, Saturday afternoon, at BPC Field.
The Barons posted a 17-2 rout in game one before holding on for a 14-11 triumph in the nightcap.
Brewton-Parker climbed over the .500 mark for the season with its big weekend, improving to 6-5.
Rio Grande fell to 0-10 as a result of the sweep,becoming just the third team in program history to begin with 10 or more consecutive losses.
The RedStorm led 1-0 after the first inning of game one, but saw the hosts turn the seven-inning affair lopsided by scoring six times in the second inning and twice in the third before pushing across nine fourth inning markers.
Brandon Lawrence hit a grand slam home run in the six-run second for BPC, while Kennard Dawson and Tate Worrell each had a two-run double in the nine-run fourth. Kyran Coleman and Kendell Wade each had a two-run single in the fourth inning explosion.
Worrell finished with two hits and Dawson drove in three runs, while Jack Morris was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Brandon Russell started and got the win for the Barons, allowing five hits and a pair of runs over five innings. He also walked three and struck out five.
Junior Gabe Carter (Huntington, WV) started and lost for Rio Grande, surrendering six hits and 12 runs - six earned - over three innings. He also walked six, while striking out three.
Offensively, sophomore Darwin Oleaga (Boston, MA) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande led game two of the twinbill, 4-0 after 2-1/2 innings, but saw its cushion evaporate when BPC scored twice in the third, four times in the fourth and once in the fifth before tacking on six more runs in the sixth.
The RedStorm made the final tally a bit more respectable in the end by scoring five times over their final three at bats.
Dawson had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs for the Barons, while Wade finished 2-for-3 with a homer of his own and three RBI.
Carson Kirby had two hits and two RBI of his own for the hosts, while Lawrence had two runs batted in and Drew DeMasi doubled and drove in a run.
Chandler Koerner - the second of six BPC pitchers - picked up the win after tossing two innings and allowing two hits and a run. Carlos Rodriguez allowed a hit and a run while striking out three over 1-1/3 innings for a save.
Junior Justin Anaya (Brownsville, TX) started and lost for Rio, surrendering five hits, six walks and nine runs over five innings.
Graduate senior AJ Thomas (Pickerington, OH) homered twice and drove in three runs for the RedStorm, while sophomore Josh Whent (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) was 3-for-5 with three RBI and senior Darius Jordan (Minford, OH) went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double.
Junior Beiker Fuentes (Crystal Lake, IL) also had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run in the loss, while juniors Braeden Gaul (Huntington, WV) and Alex Scoular (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) each had a double.
Weather permitting, the RedStorm is scheduled to make their home debut this weekend when they host Cleary (Mich.) University for doubleheader action on both Friday and Saturday at Bob Evans Field.
First pitch for Friday's pair of seven-inning contests is set for noon.
