Buffaloes trample Rio in DH sweep
Rio Grande Sports Information
MILLIGAN, Tenn. - Needless to say, it was not the best of days for the University of Rio Grande baseball team.
Milligan University hammered three home runs in an 8-1 game one win, while a trio of Buffaloes' pitchers tossed a no-hitter in a 13-0 game two rout of the RedStorm, Friday afternoon, in non-conference action at Anglin Field.
Milligan was playing its season-opening games.
Rio Grande slipped to 0-4 with the losses.
The RedStorm managed just two hits and struck out 22 times over the course of the two losses.
A search of available Rio athletic records did not immediately indicate the last time that the RedStorm - and before then the Redmen - were no-hit.
In game one, Milligan scored three times in both the first and third innings and never looked back.
Ryan Molinari homered and drove in three runs, while Roangeraud Fraai and Caleb Berry added solo home runs. Vasili Kaloudis had a two-run double in the Buffaloes' three-run first.
Andrei Beal allowed one hit and a walk while striking out 11 over five shutout innings to get the win.
Redshirt junior Reid Shultz (Minford, OH) started and took the loss for Rio Grande, allowing nine hits and seven runs - all earned - over four innings.
Graduate senior AJ Thomas (Pickerington, OH) went 1-for-3 and drove in the lone run for the RedStorm. Junior Alex Scoular (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) had Rio's other hit.
In game two, the trio of Jacob Poe, Josh Topper and Jacob Bishop blanked the RedStorm for the program's first no-hitter in six seasons.
Poe walked two and struck out seven over five innings to get the win. Topper and Bishop tossed one inning each.
Milligan got off to a quick start with a pair of first inning runs and then blew things open by scoring seven times in the third.
Angel Lobo went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Kaloudis doubled and drove home three runs and Gaven Jones was 2-for-2 with a triple and a run batted in.
Berry homered and drove in two runs, while Andrew Mathias tripled and drove in a run and Cade Kalehuawehe doubled and had two RBI.
Sophomore Daewin Spence (Portsmouth, OH), the first of six RedStorm pitchers, took the loss. He allowed six hits, three walks and eight runs - six earned - over two innings.
The two teams complete their weekend series on Saturday with two more seven-inning contests beginning at noon.
