RedStorm women crack Top 10 at Jenna Strong Classic

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Despite allowing four of its regulars to grab an added measure of respite, the University of Rio Grande women's cross country team posted a solid seventh place finish in Friday's Jenna Strong Classic hosted by Wilmington College.
The RedStorm had three of the top 45 finishers among the 194 runners in the 5k race and tallied 203 points as a team for seventh place in the 22-team field.
NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan University won the team title with a score of 66, while Wittenberg was second (102 pts.) and Mount Vernon Nazarene was third (104 pts.).
Rio Grande's finish was third among NAIA schools who participated, trailing only MVNU and St. Francis (Ind.), which finished fourth overall with a score of 113.
"We sat our top four runners on the women's side and I thought our younger kids ran really well," said Rio Grande head coach Matt Paxton.
The RedStorm's top individual outings came from the freshman duo of Ava Rooker (Chillicothe, OH) and Camryn Huck (Beverly, OH), who finished 30th and 31st, respectively, with times of 20:01 and 20:02.
Senior Jayden Roach (Baltimore, OH) also cracked the Top 50 by finishing 44th in a time of 20:22, while senior Mackenzie McCarthy (Akron, OH) narrowly missed the same distinction after placing 52nd in a time of 20:34.
Also representing Rio Grande was freshman Grace Heffernan (Bidwell, OH), who was 60th in a time of 20:48; freshman Aylah Humphreys (Leesburg, OH), who was 70th after crossing in 20:59; sophomore Rebecca Spohn (New Concord, OH), who was 83rd with a mark of 21:27; freshman Briana Nelson (Chillicothe, OH), who placed 86th with a time of 21:38; freshman Josie Hancock (Martins Ferry, OH), who was 100th after crossing in 22:05; and freshman Delana Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), who was 112th with a time of 22:35.
The top individual time belonged to Eastern Michigan's Liv Hatch, who finished in 18:04.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids, Mich.
