Rio's Evans places fourth at MSC Championship

     BOWLING GREEN Ky. - Alexandria Evans posted a fourth-place finish to lead the University of Rio Grande's performance in Friday's Mid-South Conference Women's Wrestling Championship at the Ephram White Gymnasium.
     Evans, a freshman from Barboursville, W.Va., posted a 3-2 record in the 103-pound weight class.
     After receiving a bye in the opening round of the championship bracket, Evans dropped a 10-0 technical fall decision to Zoey Haney of Indiana Tech.
     Evans had another bye in the consolation bracket before posting consecutive wins - by fall over Diandra Tejada of Brewton-Parker College at 1:19 and in a 6-4 decision over Montreat's Morgan Repasky.
     In the third-place match, Evans came up on the short end of a 10-0 technical fall result to Makayla Young from Indiana Tech.
     Two others represented Rio Grande in the tourney.
     Sophomore Annalis Ortez-Pierce (Portland, OR) placed eighth at 138 pounds after posting a 2-3 record, while freshman Paige Russell (Kettering, OH) went 2-2 at 160 pounds.
     Ortez-Pierce began the day with a loss by fall to Ariyanah Parson from the University Of The Cumberlands at 5:21, but then rebounded to pin both Athena Colderon of Siena Heights at 2:57 and Alexus Shaneyfelt from Siena Heights at 5:49.
     She was pinned by Kinnley Smith of Indiana Tech at the 2:35 mark of their match before losing to Parson again by fall at 1:34 of their seventh-place match.
     Russell began the day by pinning Montreat's Nicole Lewis 1:53, but then lost by fall at 1:06 to Kylee Tait of Campbellsville University.
     She rebounded to drop Payton Curley of Lourdes by technical fall, 10-0, but then fell in the consolation third round with an 8-0 decision to Sierra Mefford of the University of the Cumberlands.
     Rio Grande finished ninth among the 13 schools vying for the championship with 20.5 points.
     Life University easily outdistanced the rest of the field with 211.5 points, while Indiana Tech (164.0) edged Lindsey Wilson University (163.5) for runner-up honors.
