ALLIANCE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's wrestling team got off to a good start, but couldn't hang on in a 25-20 dual loss to the University of Mount Union, Friday night, in non-conference action at Timken Gymnasium.
The RedStorm bolted to a 15-0 lead out of the gate thanks to a technical foul win by freshman Alexandria Evans (Barboursville, WV) at 103 pounds and subsequent victories by fall from sophomore Haley Williams (Mason, OH) over Haley Hoffman at 110 pounds and from freshman Lyndyn Gibbs (Washington Court House, OH) over Erta Beqiri at 117.
The Purple Raiders started the road back when Olivia Gill picked up a forfeit win at 124 pounds, before Abigail Mozden pinned freshman Jade Fairbanks (Belpre, OH) at 131 and Addison Lion did the same to sophomore Annalis Ortez-Pierce (Portland, OR) at 138 to notch the match score at 15-all.
The hosts took the lead when Karlie Stith posted a technical fall win over junior Kara Bebout (Mechanicsburg, OH) at 145 pounds, but Rio Grande re-tied the match thanks to freshman Paige Russell's (Kettering, OH) pin of Ebony Harding at 160 pounds.
Mount Union finished things off, though, when Lori Grimes pinned Rio freshman Jasmin Calix (Pataskala, OH) in their 180-pound get together and Lyndsee Young's forfeit win at 207 pounds.
Rio Grande will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Mo.
