RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's wrestling team earned a split in their home opener Monday night, falling to Bethany (WV) College and rolling past Midway (KY) University in a non-conference triangular at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The RedStorm fell to the Bison, 30-17, before rebounding with a 31-8 triumph over Midway.
Midway also dropped a 36-13 decision to Bethany in the night's other dual.
Rio Grande began the night against Bethany with a 12-0 technical fall win by freshman Alexandria Evans (Barboursville, WV) over McKenna Acampora at 103 pounds, a 6-5 victory by sophomore Haley Williams (Mason, OH) over Ashley Campbell at 110 pounds and a pin by freshman Lyndyn Gibbs (Washington Court House, OH) of Angelina Watson at 117 pounds.
From that point on, though, the RedStorm managed just one more win against the Bison - an 11-2 decision by junior Kara Bebout (Mechanicsburg, OH) over Jasmine Craddock at 145 pounds.
The remainder of Rio's night against Bethany saw freshman Jade Fairbanks (Belpre, OH) lose by fall to Taelor Rae Busch at 1:19 of her 124-pound bout; sophomore Annalis Ortez-Pierce (Portland, OR) lose by fall to Ari Tyson at 2:01 of her 138-pound match; freshman Paige Russell (Kettering, OH) drop a 6-2 decision to Chase Marie Ryan at 160 pounds; and freshman Jasmine Calix (Pataskala, OH) lose by pinfall 55 seconds into her 180-pound match with Trinity Barrus.
The RedStorm took forfeit losses at both the 131- and 207-pound divisions.
Against Midway, the trio of Evans, Williams and Gibbs all won again - all by fall.
Evans won 24 seconds into her match with Zyler McMillian, Williams got the job done against Lana Reeves at 2:22 and Gibbs needed only 49 seconds to take out Jillian Ellis.
Fairbanks also got a victory via the pin, defeating Kyla Vest at 1:29 of their 131-pound match, with Ortez-Pierce and Calix picking up forfeit wins.
Midway's only wins came when Kaily Bussard decisioned Bebout, 12-3, at 145 pounds and Trinity Gottler pinned Russell at 1:52 of their 160-pound bout.
Double forfeits occurred at 124 and 207 pounds.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio.
