TIFFIN, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's wrestling team got a pair of fourth-place finishes and a sixth-place showing in its season-opening event at Saturday's Tiffin Open at the Heminger Center.
Freshman Alexandria Evans (Barboursville, WV) finished fourth at 103 pounds and freshman Lyndyn Gibbs (Washington Court House, OH) did the same at 117 pounds, while sophomore Annalis Ortez-Pierce (Portland, OR) placed sixth in the 138-pound bracket.
After receiving a first round bye, Evans defeated Lindsey Wilson University's Skyler Randolph in overtime, 13-6, before posting a 10-0 technical fall triumph over Adrian University's Vy Tran in the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket.
Evans was the victim of a 10-0 technical fall loss to Indiana Tech's Zoey Haney in the semifinals, but rebounded with a pin of Otterbein's Vita Savage at 1:35 of their consolation bracket semifinal match.
Evans suffered another technical fall loss - to Chiara Barbieri of West Liberty University - in the third place match.
Gibbs started her day off with a 10-0 technical fall loss to Lindsey Wilson's Grace Lashinsky, but then followed up a first round consolation bye with five consecutive victories to reach the third-place match in her weight class.
Gibbs pinned Mount Union's Aubrey Eilsinger at 1:02, Indiana Tech's Riley Horvath at 4:56 and Kaylin Taylor from the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 1:22 before moving past Adrian's Carleigh Czerneski due to injury default at the 2:11 mark of their match.
A 4-1 overtime win over Lindsey Wilson's Rodiat Adeduntan, who was wrestling Unattached, preceded a 4-3 loss to Lindsey Wilson's Jaden Evans in the third place match.
Ortez-Pierce captured wins in each of her first three matches before falling in each of her final three bouts.
She opened the day with a 10-6 decision over Ryen Allen of Alma before pinning both Lina Lingo of Tiffin and Naimi Rodriguez, who was wrestling Unattached, at 2:12 and 1:28, respectively.
Ortez-Pierce was pinned by Lindsey Wilson's Brielle Bibla just 22 seconds into their semifinal match in the championship bracket before losing - also by pinfall - to Oriyana Castex from the University of the Cumberlands at 2:19 and to Sophia Antonio from Tiffin University at 34 seconds of their fifth-place match.
Also representing Rio Grande in the tournament was freshman Paige Russell (Kettering, OH), who went 2-2 in the 160-pound division; sophomore Haley Williams (Mason, OH) and freshman Jasmin Calix (Pataskala, OH), who picked up one win each in the 110-pound and the 180-pound brackets, respectively; as well as freshman Avery Miley (Mansfield, OH) and sophomore Claudia Mendez (Henderson, KY), who went winless in the 103- and 145-pound divisions, respectively.
The RedStorm return to action on Monday, Nov. 10 against Midway University and Bethany College in a home tri-match at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Match time is set for 7 p.m.
