Alvarado gives Rio women first tournament win

     HIRAM, Ohio - Angie Alvarado gave the University of Rio Grande's fledgling women's wrestling program its first-ever win, taking first place in the 124-pound division of Sunday's Terrier Round Robin, hosted by Hiram College at Price Gymnasium.
     Alvarado, a freshman from Lima, Peru, went 5-0 with a pair of wins by all and three by technical fall.
     She opened by pinning Lauren Palmer of Utica University at the 0:46 mark, before technical fall triumphs over Dianna Pineda of Alfred State (12-0), Becca Waterman from Indiana Tech (10-0) and Andrea Rodriguez of Manchester (10-0).
     In the championship match, Alvarado defeated Manchester's Paola Villarruel by fall at 2:11.
     Alvarado is now 11-2 on the season.
     The three other representatives from Rio Grande fared well in the event, posting a runner-up finish and two third-place showings.
     Sophomore Kara Bebout (Mechanicsburg, OH) and freshman Annalis Ortez-Pierce (Portland, OR) posted a 4-1 record at 160 pounds and 138 pounds, respectively, while freshman Haley Williams (Mason, OH) went 3-2 in the 110-pound bracket.
     Bebout began her day by losing to Manchester's Reilynn Swift by fall at 0:58, but rebounded to win the remaining four matches.
     She decisioned Tessa Allen of Manchester, 12-4, before recording 10-0 technical fall victories over Claire Bennett from Manchester and Allydia Byard of Hiram.
     Bebout then closed with a pin of Alfred State's Allison Strausbaugh at 2:23.
     Ortez-Pierce won each of her first two matches by fall, topping Akira Jones of Indiana Tech at 1:44 and Alfred State's Brooke Walsh at 2:35, before losing to Utica's Braylin Jones by fall at 2:42.
     She bounced back to pin Alexandria Mazzella of York College at 4:59 before winning by fall over Utica's Gillian Mills at 3:29 of the third-place match.
     Williams opened with a 10-0 technical fall win over Jackeline Shackleford from Manchester before being pinned by Gisele Ramirez of York College at 1:08.
     She then pinned Daisey Hawkins of York College at 1:44, before losing by fall to Kylee Bentley from Hiram at 2:25.
     Williams finished her day by defeating Lexi Doerflinger of Hiram by fall at 2:54.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 12, at the West Liberty Open in West Liberty, W.Va.
