Pomeroys too much for Rio women

     ST.MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - Amber Doyle and Hannah Zuege led a strong performance along the net which lifted St. Mary-of-the-Woods College to a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 25-14) win over the University of Rio Grande in River States Conference women's volleyball action, Saturday afternoon, at the Knoerle Center.
     Doyle had a match-best 17 kills to go along with a pair of solo blocks and one block assist, while Zuege added 15 kills of her own for the host Pomeroys, who pushed their overall season record to 23-4 and their league mark to 8-4 with the victory.
     Rio Grande dropped to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the RSC with the loss - its third in the last four outings.
     The RedStorm trailed by as many as seven points late in set one before forging a 24-all tie following a kill by freshman Ryleigh Meeker, but SMWC rebounded with a kill from Kira Gonzalez and a service ace from Zulairam to grab the early match lead.
     Rio was down 16-15 in set two, but scored 10 of the final 13 winners in the set to even the match.
     The Pomeroys finished set three strong with nine of the final 11 winners to snap a 16-16 deadlock and their only deficit in the fourth stanza came early at 3-1.
     SMWC finished with a solid .287 attack percentage thanks to 53 kills and 18 errors in 122 swings.
     Jocelyn Chavez added 24 digs in the winning effort, while Jade Llamas and Dynaida Orta had 24 and 16 assists, respectively.
     De Jesus and Sydni Bailey had three service aces each for the Pomeroys, while Morgan Krause had three solo blocks and one block assist.
     Junior Amanda Rarick (Canal Winchester, OH) had 14 kills to lead Rio Grande, while junior Darcie Walters (Sparta, OH) had 15 digs and sophomore Avery Huntzinger totaled 33 assists.
     The RedStorm had a .120 swing percentage with 38 kills and 23 errors in 125 attacks.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night at West Virginia University-Tech.
