Rio volleyball swept in RSC Crossover

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande volleyball team saw a pair of comeback attempts fall short on Saturday as the RedStorm dropped matches to Brescia University and Indiana University Southeast in a River States Conference Crossover event hosted by West Virginia University-Tech at Van Meter Gym.
The RedStorm suffered a 25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 15-10 loss to Brescia, before losing to IU Southeast 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23.
The losses left head coach Billina Donaldson's club with a three-match losing streak, as well as a 9-10 record overall and an 0-3 mark in the RSC.

Senior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) had a team-high 19 kills, 26 assists, 18 digs and five blocks in the five-set setback to the Bearcats, while junior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) and freshman Marley Hanzel (Wheelersburg, OH) added 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Freshman McKenzie Steele (Coolville, OH) contributed 19 assists and 12 digs in a losing cause, while senior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) had 17 digs and 10 assists.
Rio Grande also got five blocks from freshman Rachael Gilkey (Nelsonville, OH) and 12 digs from junior Kylan Strausbaugh (Chillicothe, OH).
Natalie Jones had 22 kills and 19 digs to lead Brescia, while Rhiannon Ungerer had 18 kills and 17 digs in the victory.
Shelby Buschkoetter and Alex Satterfield had 23 and 18 assists, respectively, for the Bearcats and Bonnie Jones finished with 13 digs.
In the loss to IUS, senior Autumn Snider (Marion, OH) finished with 17 kills, four blocks and three service aces, while Pelphrey had 10 kills and Briley finished with 36 assists.
Pelphrey also had a team-high 14 digs and Brown finished with 11 digs in a losing cause.
Monica Loftus, Katie Fischer and Hannah Joly all had 13 kills to pace the Grenadiers, while Mary Dye had 10 kills and Hannah Barker tallied a match-high 50 assists.
Natalie Keene had a team-best 19 digs, while Loftus added 16 of her own. Dye and Barker had five blocks each.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night when WVU Tech visits the Newt Oliver Arena for an RSC match. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
