RedStorm women break records, hit qualifying marks

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Stella Gilcher posted a victory and a runner-up finish as the University of Rio Grande women's track and field team posted a handful of Top 10 performances across a handful of different events over the weekend.
Gilcher, a sophomore from Amesville, Ohio, was among the RedStorm team members competing at the Concord University Open Invitational in Athens, W.Va.
She won the Pole Vault after clearing 2.85m and was second in the triple jump with an effort of 8.70m.
Freshman Joleigh Nott (Gallipolis Ferry, WV) also had a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles, recording a time of 1:09.79.
Rio Grande finished seventh as team with 26 points. Bluefield (WV) State won the team title with 163 points, while host Concord was the runner-up with 103 points and West Virginia State was third (98 pts.).
In the Lee University Fast Break Athletics Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn., senior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH) hit the "B" qualifying standard in the 10,000-meter run by finishing ninth in a time of 36:33.70.
Junior Laura Hamm (South Point, OH) also had a ninth-place finish at Lee in the 800-meter run, completing the race in a school-record time of 2:14.11.
Rio Grande also had four athletes take part in the United States Athletic Track & Field National Race Walk Championship's 5,000-meter mixed walk at the Athletes in Action Track Complex in Xenia, Ohio.
Junior Becca Spohn (New Concord, OH) recorded a 10th place finish overall and had the top time among women's runners with a mark of 26:39.80. freshman Briana Nelson (Chillicothe, OH) was 15th after crossing in 30:43.04 and freshman Delana Jenkins (Barnesville, OH) grabbed 16th place with a time of 33:41.15.
Spohn is now ranked fourth nationally in the event, while Nelson and Jenkins both find themselves in the Top 20.
Graduate senior Mackenzie McCarthy (Akron, OH) would've had a spot in the Top 20 as well, but was disqualified after the finish for lifting.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Friday and will send athletes to both the Otterbein Twilight in Westerville, Ohio and the Centre Outdoor Twilight in Danville, Ky.
