Rio women 3rd after opening day of RSC Championships

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women find themselves in third place following Friday's opening day of competition at the 2025 River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at a rainy Stockmeister Track and Field.
The RedStorm compiled 54.5 points over nine scored events and trails day one leader Midway University (62 pts.) and rival Shawnee State University (56 pts.) in the team standings.
The top eight finishers in each event earn points toward the overall team championship.
Individually, redshirt junior Grace Forrest (Woodstock, OH) and junior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH) had Rio's top performances of the day.
Forrest won the 5,000-meter race walk in dominating fashion, finishing in a time of 25:51.82 - nearly four minutes ahead of her teammate, sophomore Rebecca Spohn (New Concord, OH), who took second in 29:38.02.
Kerns took top honors in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:11.87 - nearly 12 seconds faster than the runner-up mark.
The RedStorm's 4x800 relay team - comprised of senior Jayden Roach (Baltimore, OH), Forrest, senior Kendra Grooms (West Union, OH) and sophomore Laura Hamm (South Point, OH) - took first place in a time of 9:54.04.
Other scoring finishes for Rio on Friday were produced by freshman Rebecca Cadle (Bidwell, OH), who was second in the pole vault after clearing 3.30m; Grooms, who was fourth in the high jump with an effort of 1.55m; freshman Stella Gilcher (Amesville, OH), who placed sixth in the pole vault at 2.85m; and freshman Kylie Gilmore (Ironton, OH), who was eighth in the 5,000-meter race walk at 35:32.08.
Rio also had two qualifiers for finals in their respective events after preliminary round action on Friday.
Cadle had the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 16.25, while freshman Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH) had the second-fastest times in both the 100-meter dash (12.49) and the 200-meter dash (25.93).
Saturday's final day of competition is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
