Kerns grabs win, Hamm sets record for RedStorm women

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Amarissa Kerns gave the University of Rio Grande women's track and field team its lone win at Saturday's Steemer Showcase hosted by Wittenberg University at the Steemer.
Laura Hamm also set a new school record and hit the "B" qualifying standard for the upcoming NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 800-meter run.
Kerns, a junior from Lancaster, Ohio, won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:51.55, missing the "B" qualifying standard by two seconds.
Hamm, a sophomore from South Point, Ohio, finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:17.24, establishing a new school-best time and hitting the "B" standard.
Rio Grande also finished 2-3-4 in the 300-meter dash.
Freshman Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH) took runner-up in a time of 43.12, while senior Jayden Roach (Baltimore, OH) was third at 43.89 and senior Kendra Grooms (West Union, OH) placed fourth in 44.42. All three times rank in the top five on the school's all-time list.
The RedStorm had two other Top 10 individual performances with freshman Rebecca Cadle (Bidwell, OH) finishing fifth in the pole vault with an effort of 3.35m and Grooms taking seventh in the high jump at 1:55m.
Rio's 4x400 relay team - comprised of Roach, Hamm, Grooms and Montgomery - finished second after crossing in a time of 4:05.19.
Rio Grande will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Ashland University Invitational in Ashland, Ohio.
