IU East halts pair of RedStorm streaks

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Before the close of the first half, the University of Rio Grande's streak of keeping the opposition off the scoreboard had come to an end.
By the end of the game, so, too, had the RedStorm's winning streak.
Indiana University East scored three unanswered goals, including two in the second half, en route to a 3-1 win over Rio Grande, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The Red Wolves pushed their overall record to 9-5-2 with the win, while improving to 6-2 against conference foes.
The RedStorm, who had won each of their previous four outings, dropped to 7-4-5 overall and 5-2-1 in the RSC as a result of the loss.
Rio got off to a solid start, taking a 1-0 lead when senior Carmen Morris (Lancaster, OH) scored off of a touch by freshman Neveah Peffers (Dresden, OH) with just 9:57 gone off the clock.
IU East got the equalizer in the waning moments of the of the opening period when Kelsey Leming gathered in a pass from Rylee Meyer and found the back of the net with 2:28 left before halftime.
The goal was the first allowed by the RedStorm in a span of 420 minutes and 50 seconds - a period covering parts of six games.
The Red Wolves then moved in front just over 4-1/2 minutes into the second half when Katherine Lopez Cruz scored off an assist by Zaryah Griffin.
That's how things stayed until late when, with 2:48 left to play, Mia Runyan scored on a free kick from just outside the right side of the 18-yard box to set the final score.
Rio Grande finished with a 10-7 edge in shots overall and a 6-4 advantage in shots on frame. The RedStorm also had seven of the 10 corners kicks in the match.
Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelna, Spain) recorded one save in goal for Rio Grande.
Elizabeth Sarfo-Benson had five stops in the winning effort for IU East.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Thursday afternoon when it hosts Kentucky Christian University in another RSC contest.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
