BECKLEY, W.Va. - On a night when scoring opportunities were few and far between, the University of Rio Grande made good on one of its scant chances early on and then held on the rest of the way.
The RedStorm scored just over 15 minutes into the match and maintained their lead for the remainder of the night, posting a 1-0 win over West Virginia University-Tech, Thursday night, in River States Conference women's soccer action at the Paul Cline YMCA Soccer Complex.
Rio Grande improved to 5-3-5 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play with the victory.
The host Golden Bears suffered their first setback in league play and finished the night at 7-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the RSC.
The two teams combined for just seven shots altogether - four for WVU-Tech and three for the RedStorm - and both had two shots on frame.
Six of the 10 corner kick chances in the match belonged to the hosts.
Rio's first shot of the night produced the game's only marker when senior Sara Estrada Fernandez (Barcelona, Spain) played a pass from senior Carmen Morris (Lancaster, OH) into the net with 15:14 gone in the contest. The goal was her first of the season.
Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) stopped two shots in a clean sheet effort - snaring Sarah DaSilva's header off of a corner kick with 5:14 left in the first half and stopping Sophie Quinaln's attempt with 15:31 left in the game.
Sandra Garcia Quilez had one save in net for the Golden Bears.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Midway University in another RSC contest at Evan E. Davis Field.
Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
