Fired up RedStorm responds with win

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - The University of Rio Grande women's soccer team is no stranger to the scoreless tie this season.
Three of the RedStorm's five draws over the course of the 2025 campaign have failed to yield a score and Thursday afternoon's River States Conference get together with St. Mary-of-the-Woods College appeared headed down the same path.
But, perhaps, it was the early departure of Rio head coach Brooke Perkins that ended up turning the tide.
Perkins was assessed a pair of yellow cards and, subsequently, ejected from the game with just over 26 minutes left to play and the spirited RedStorm responded shortly thereafter with what proved to be the game's lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Pomeroys at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
Rio Grande pushed its season mark to 3-2-5 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The host Pomeroys fell to 0-9-1 overall and 0-3 inside the RSC.
Rio Grande, as it has done in each of their last two outings, enjoyed a commanding edge in overall shots (16-6) and had a 9-5 advantage in shots on frame.
The RedStorm also had both of the corner kick chances in the contest.
But nothing found its way into the net until after the argument which cost Perkins her spot on the sideline with 26:08 remaining. Ironically, the two cards were the only ones issued during the match.
Just under three minutes later, freshman Stephanie Beaulieu (Morrow, OH) snapped the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods managed only one shot - not on goal - the rest of the way.
Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) had five saves in the winning effort for Rio.
Eerika Erjansalo recorded eight saves in a losing cause for the Pomeroys.
Rio Grande will wrap up its two-game weekend road trip on Saturday afternoon at Brescia University.
