Rio women, Bruins play to 1-1 draw

Rio Grande Sports Information
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For a while it looked as if a late goal would keep the University of Rio Grande perfect and Carolina University winless on the young season.
But, sometimes, looks can be a bit deceiving.
Peyton Battilla's goal with just under eight minutes remaining erased a deficit that came about just 5-1/2 minutes earlier and gave the host Bruins a 1-1 tie with the RedStorm, Friday evening, in non-conference women's soccer action at Truist Sports Park.
Carolina moved to 0-2-1 as a result of the draw.
Rio Grande finished the night at 1-0-1.
Rio Grande snapped a scoreless tie with just 13:24 left to play when junior Morgan Fannin (Circleville, OH) found the back of the net thanks to a feed from senior Jitske De Muijnk (Nymegen, Netherlands), but Carolina recorded the equalizer when Battilla scored off of a pass from teammate Alondra Ramon with 7:55 showing on the clock.
Neither team managed a shot on frame the rest of the way.
The RedStorm was outshot 13-11 overall, but head coach Brooke Perkins' team had three of the game's five shots on goal.
The Bruins had three of the five corner kicks in the match,
Senior goalie Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) had one save for Rio Grande.
Waleska Gonzalez and Laurel Collins each worked one half in goal for Carolina and each was credited with one save.
Rio Grande wraps up its weekend road swing on Sunday afternoon when it faces Columbia College in Columbia, S.C.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
