RedStorm cruises to season-opening victory

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande scored three times over a span of 10 minutes in the opening half and cruised to a 4-0 win over Bluefield (Va.) University, Thursday evening, in non-conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
Both teams were playing their regular season openers.
Senior Jitske De Muijnk (Nymegen, Netherlands) scored one goal and assisted on another as the host RedStorm controlled the action throughout, outshooting Rams 35-1 overall and 13-0 on goal.
De Muijnk assisted on a goal by senior Carmen Morris (Lancater, OH) with 14:50 left in the first half to snap a scoreless tie, while freshman Neveah Peffers (Dresden, OH) scored off of a feed from senior Amelia Willis (Waverly, OH) just over two minutes later to push the lead to 2-0.
Rio got its final goal of the half when De Muijnk scored via a pass from sophomore Elise Alexander (Cincinnati, OH)with 4:49 left before the intermission.
The 3-0 margin stood until senior Saskia Vos (Sydney, Australia) scored off an assist by freshman Alex Lefevre (Canal Winchester, OH) with 7:43 remaining in the contest to set the final tally.
Nineteen different players saw action for the RedStorm, who also enjoyed a 9-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Senior Alba Vilades Marin (Barcelona, Spain) picked up the win in goal for the hosts.
Autumn Matthews went the distance in net for Bluefield and was credited with nine saves in a losing cause.
Rio Grande returns to action next Friday when it opens a two-game holiday weekend road swing at Carolina (N.C.) University.
