PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Rachel Flory's goal off of a corner kick by teammate Malak Shuman with 2:23 left to play lifted Carlow University to a 2-1 win over the University of Rio Grande, Friday morning, in River States Conference women's soccer action at Highmark Stadium.
The Celtics improved to 7-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play with the victory.
Rio Grande, which had a seven-game unbeaten streak snapped with the loss, slipped to 7-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the RSC.
Flory's game-winning marker came just under 2-1/2 minutes after the RedStorm had forged a 1-1 tie on a goal by junior Kelsey Lee (West Chester, OH).
Rio Grande did not muster another scoring opportunity, though, in the final two minutes.
Carlow outshot the RedStorm 15-9 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal.
The Celtics grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 32:16 mark of the opening stanza when Alexa Mermigas found the back of the net off an assist by Riley Walsh and that's how things stayed until the frantic finish.
Lexie Mirenda recorded three saves in goal for Carlow.
Junior Andrea Vera (Quito, Ecuador) stopped six shots in a losing cause for Rio Grande.
Rio Grande continues its weekend stay in Pittsburgh on Sunday when it faces Point Park University in an 11 a.m. kickoff at Highmark Stadium.
