Rio women get win in second tourney of season

     COLUMBUS, Ohio - After posting a fourth-place finish in their season-opening event, the University of Rio Grande women's bowling team captured the championship of the Capital Kickoff Classic on the weekend of Sept. 20-21.
     The RedStorm toppled 4,461 pins to finish at the top of the five-team Capital Classic. Muskingum University was second with 4,331 pins and host Capital University was third at 4,195 pins.
     Rio's winning effort was fueled by sophomore Lina Fernandez (Mechanicsburg, PA), who finished third individually with 567 pins in her three games for an average of 189.
     Fernandez also was responsible for the RedStorm's single-game high with a 213 in round two.
     Emma Pugh of Ohio State University took medalist honors by knocking down 586 pins over three rounds of action.
     Among the others who rolled for the RedStorm were senior Hannah Halstead (Delaware, OH), who placed 11th at 527 pins over three games; junior Julianna LeMaster (Chillicothe, OH), who was 16th with 513 pins over three rounds; junior Payton Goodman (Cardington, OH), who finished 19th with 495 pins over three games; and junior Jaelyn Hughes (Indian Lake, OH), who was 21st with 477 pins in her three rounds.
     Rio's win came one day after a fourth-place finish in the DO Apparel/Brunswick Collegiate Open. The RedStorm finished with 4,476 pins.
     The University of Northwestern Ohio won the team crown with 5,010 pins, while the University of the Cumberlands (4,794) and Muskingum University (4,620) rounded out the top three.
     Goodman rolled a team-best 235 in game one en route to 576 pins over three games and a fourth-place finish.
     Hughes also gave the RedStorm a Top 10 finish by knocking down 538 pins over three games and placing ninth. Fernandez placed 27th with 475 pins over three innings, Lemaster was 34th with 454 pins in three games, sophomore Melanie Liming (Georgetown, OH) was 53rd with 343 pins in two games and Halstead rolled a 136 in her only game.
     Paige Frentz from the University of the Cumberlands won the individual title with 639 pins over three games.
     Rio's junior varsity teams were also in action in both tournaments.
     The RedStorm finished fifth among six teams in the DO Apparel with 3,174 pins and was fourth in the five-team Capital Classic with 3,037 pins.
     Shawnee State captured the DO Apparel title with 3,836 pins, while Capital placed second with 3,548 pins and Ohio State University was third at 3,409 pins.
     Senior Megan Foltz (South Point, OH) topped Rio individually with 406 pins over three games and finished 42nd overall.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Rylan Rudd (Marion, OH), who was 51st with 350 pins over three games; sophomore Addison Jones (Winchester, OH), who finished 52nd at 347 pins in three rounds; freshman Ariah Zellner (Crestline, OH), who was 68th with 241 pins in two games; freshman Keerstin Shaver (Vinton, OH), who was 71st with 218 pins over two rounds; and sophomore Kendall Harrod (Chillicothe, OH), who was 74th with 177 pins in two games.
     In the Capital Classic, the host team took the team championship with 3,573 pins. Ohio State was second at 3,455 pins and Tiffin University placed third with 3,327 pins.
     Shaver led Rio with 413 pins over three games for 29th place, while Jones and Foltz placed 33rd and 34th, respectively, with 384 and 380 pins in three rounds each.
     Also rolling for Rio was Zellner, who was 37th with 339 pins over three games; Rudd, who placed 48th at 199 pins over two games and Harrod, who was 57th with a 105 in her only game.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament No. 1.
