Rio men rub shoulders with big boys at Short Run
Rio Grande Sports Information
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - They say the only way to get better is to increase the level of competition around you.
On Friday morning, that was something the University of Rio Grande men's cross country team took to heart.
The RedStorm were the only NAIA team to run in the Gold Division of Lehigh University's Paul Short Run at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
Head coach Matt Paxton's squad finished 37th in the 40-team field, which was loaded primarily with NCAA Division I schools, with 1,026 points.
Georgetown University won the team championship with 102 points, while Utah State was second with 123 points and Texas A&M finished third with 137 points.
Harvard's Sam Burgess had the top time individually on the 8k course with a mark of 23:18.
Rio's top individual time came from senior Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), who was 113th in the field of 354 runners with a time of 24:36.
"The guys ran our second fastest average ever, with Tyler's time being bettered only by his previous school record," Paxton said. "The race had several ranked DI schools and the top-ranked DII school in Wingate. We punched way above our weight today."
Also competing for the RedStorm was sophomore Ryder Crawford (Batavia, OH), who finished 225th in a time of 25:24; Mugisha Pomossene, who crossed in 25:30 for 240th place; Kasy Science, who was 291st in a time of 26:03; senior Carter Lipscomb (West Union, WV), who finished 298th after crossing in 26:08; sophomore Anton Meinlschmidt (Weibeyoke, Germany), who was 306th in a time of 26:17; freshman Moritz Siegel (Leipzig, Germany), who placed 312th in 26:20; freshman Micah Balsmeyer (Walbridge, OH), who was 318th in a time of 26:38; sophomre John Young (Leroy, OH), who posted a time of 27:06 for 332nd place; and junior Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was 337th in a time of 27:46.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, at the Jenna Strong Fall Classic hosted by Wilmington (OH) College.
