Rio grapplers roll Defiance, Golden Bears

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's wrestling team took advantage of a rare home event, cruising to wins over Defiance College and West Virginia University-Tech as part of a triangular meet, Friday night, at the Newt Oliver Arena.
     The RedStorm took down Defiance, 36-8, before thumping WVU-Tech, 40-15.
     Junior Pate Eastin (Granger, IN) and senior Bruce Wagers (Cincinnati, OH) led the winning effort with two wins on the mat, while junior Trey Allen (Mechanicsburg, OH) and senior Justin Bartee (Point Pleasant, WV) also notched a pair of victories - one on the mat and the other by forfeit.
     Eastin decisioned Defiance's Graiden Troth, 5-0, before pinning WVU-Tech's Shannon Fray at the 4:28 mark of their 165-pound match.
     Wagers, did his damage in the 285-pound division, defeating Evan Smigelski from Defiance by technical fall, 16-0, at 4:28 of their get together before pinning Tech's Adam Turpin-Abdulrazaaq at 1:04.
     Bartee earned a 4-2 decision over Kale Waxler of Defiance in his only on-mat appearance at 184 pounds, while Allen rolled to a 21-6 technical fall triumph over WVU-Tech's Luke Carpenter in their 141-pound match.
     Rio's only other on-mat win against Defiance came from sophomore Conner Blessing (Point Pleasant, WV), who posted a 7-5 decision over Drew Matthews at 149 pounds.
     Freshman Josh Morrison (Reynoldsburg, OH) and freshman Jaydon DeHart (Ashland, KY) had forfeit wins over the Yellow Jackets at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, while freshman John Walters (Ashland, KY) dropped a 13-7 decision to Daniel Thatcher at 174 pounds and freshman Malik Tufts (Columbus, OH) suffered a 22-5 technical fall loss to Connor Sintobin at 3:49 of their 197-pound bout.
     In the nightcap against WVU-Tech, the RedStorm's team triumph included wins by sophomore Ben Sloan (Ironton, OH) at 149 pounds and senior Mackandle Freeman (Point Pleasant, WV) at 157 pounds.
     Sloan pinned Corbyn Cunningham at 5:38 of their match and Freeman cruised to a 16-0 technical fall victory against William Vila in a match stopped at 5:17.
     The Golden Bears, who dropped a 34-18 decision to Defiance in the opening match of the night, jumped to an 11-0 lead after a forfeit win for David Maxson at 125 pounds and a victory by technical fall for Jeremiah Chinyere-Okiyi over DeHart at 133, but the visitors managed only one win the rest of the night - a 12-2 majority decision for Curtis Smith over Walters.
     Rio's point total also included a forfeit triumph for Tufts at 197 pounds.
     The RedStorm is scheduled to return to action next Friday with a dual at Midway University.
     Match time is set for 7 p.m.
