LEBANON, Tenn. - For the University of Rio Grande wrestling team, Wednesday night's front end of a two-event road swing made a long road trip even longer.
The RedStorm managed just one victory over the course of two duals against ranked Mid-South Conference foes, falling 50-3 to No. 9 Campbellsville University and 50-0 to No. 12 Cumberland University at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The two losses left Rio with a 2-10 record in dual matches.
Sophomore Mitchell Freeman (point Pleasant, WV) notched Rio's only win of the night with a 9-4 decision over Campbellsville's Gavin Andreoni in their 149-pound match.
The Tigers - who sported a lineup which included five wrestlers ranked in the Top 25 of their weight class - cruised to the match win, though, with five falls, two majority decisions and a pair of forfeits.
Against the host Phoenix, Rio was blanked on the basis of two forfeits, four falls, a technical fall and a trio of decision.
Seven of Cumberland's 10 wrestlers were ranked in the top 25 of their respective weight classes, including Cole Smith, who is the top-ranked grappler at 165 pounds.
The three RedStorm wrestlers who went the distance in a losing cause were Freeman, who fell 7-0 to Ramiro Mosquero; sophomore Anthony Parks (Jackson, OH), who came up on the short end of a 12-8 final against No. 23 Austin Antcliffe at 184 pounds; and freshman Bruce Wagers (Cincinnati, OH), who fell 6-0 to No. 24 River Henry in the heavyweight bout.
Rio Grande wraps up its long sojourn on Saturday at the CBC Invitational, which is being hosted by Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark.
