RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande wrestling program made history on Thursday night by hosting its first-ever home event.
Unfortunately, the visitors from Thomas More University prevented the RedStorm from writing a storybook ending.
The Saints won seven times in the 10-match dual and posted a 39-13 win at the Newt Oliver Arena.
"From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to thank each and every person who made it out tonight," said Rio Grande head coach Jason Schweer. "The Newt was indeed jumpin'. What an amazing atmosphere everyone created. The support was truly wilder than anything I could've imagined."
Thomas More did its best to drain the energy from the spirited crowd, bolting to a 30-0 lead with wins in each of the first five weight divisions - four of which came by fall.
Rio freshman Colin Greenwood (Bethesda, OH) was pinned at 1:17 of his 125-pound match and junior Lucas Chess (Urbana, OH) suffered the same fate at 6:51 of his 133-pound bout, before the Saints collected a forfeit win at 141 pounds.
Freshman Mackandle Freeman, who hails from nearby Point Pleasant, W.Va., received a boisterous ovation prior to his 149-pound match, but was pinned at 2:28. Fellow frosh Westyn Moyer (Urbana, OH) was also pinned at the 50-second mark in his 157-pound showdown.
The RedStorm then snared back-to-back victories when junior Brennen Greene (Jackson, OH) to his 165-pound match by forfeit and freshman Justin Bartee - another Point Pleasant product - earned a 9-8 decision at 174 pounds.
Freshman Aiden Greene (Bidwell, OH) was pinned at 6:49 of his 184-pound match, but sophomore Anthony Parks (Jackson, OH) rebounded with an 11-2 majority decision at 197 pounds.
The final match of the night - the heavyweight division - saw freshman Bruce Wagers (Cincinnati, OH) battle from start to finish before suffering a late 9-8 loss.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Dec. 11 at the NAIA Challenge Duals hosted by Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky.
