Tigers cruise to straight sets win over Rio men

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Georgetown College used a massive night along the net - both offensively and defensively - to fuel a 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 triumph over the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday night, in River States Conference men's volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The Tigers, who were ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA Top 25 coaches' poll, improved to 15-7 overall and 10-2 in the RSC with the victory.
Rio Grande, which had won five of its previous six outings, dropped to 13-10 overall and 5-7 in league play as a result of the loss.
The RedStorm endured their fourth-lowest attack percentage on the season (.068) with 30 kills and 25 errors in 73 swings -a figure which came on the heels of the second-highest figure in program history (.456) in Saturday's sweep over Indiana University East.
Georgetown, on the other hand, hit a robust .483 in the win with 33 kills and just five errors in 58 swings.
The Tigers also made life rough for their hosts defensively, totaling one solo block and 18 block assists.
Georgetown led 11-8 in set one after kill by Rio sophomore Camilo Murillo (Cali, Colombia), but went on a 6-1 run to pull away.
The Tigers led just 15-14 in the second stanza following a kill by Rio sophomore Daniel Rivas (Valle Del Cauca, Colombia), but proceeded to blow things open by scoring each of the next seven winners.
The RedStorm were tied a 12-all in set three after a service error by Georgetown's Kristjan Unt, but the Tigers closed out the set - and the match - with a 13-2 run.
Michal Bak led the winning effort with 11 kills and four digs, while Ilan Weinberger and Andrew Mayhew finished with 16 and 15 assists, respectively.
Luis Vivius had a solo block and seven block assists, while Bak had five block assists and Adam Szewinski finished with three service aces.
Junior Otavio Tonoli (Campinas, Brazil) had nine kills for Rio Grande, while senior Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 19 assists and two service aces and the duo of Murillo and sophomore Thomas Lhoste (Courbevoie, France) were credited with five digs each.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday night when it opens a weekend road swing at Cumberland (Tenn.) University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT.
