Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Despite leaving a handful of its regulars at home and a bus breakdown a few miles shy of its intended destination, Georgetown College showed why its, arguably, one of the top men's volleyball teams in both the Mid-South Conference and the NAIA in general.
The Tigers led for the most of the night and secured the top seed in this weekend's MSC Tournament with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 27-25) win over the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday night, in the regular season finale for both teams at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Georgetown, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA coaches' Top 15 poll, improved to 22-6 overall and 9-1 in the MSC as a result of the victory.
The Tigers won a tiebreaker with Campbellsville University for the top seed in the post-season bracket.
Rio Grande finished 12-18 overall and 3-7 in league play with the loss.
The RedStorm will be the No. 4 seed in the six-team tourney and will face fifth-seeded Brescia University in Thursday's opening match, at 4:30 p.m. EDT, at Bowling Green High School in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Rio-Brescia winner will face Georgetown in one of two semifinal contests on Friday.
Tuesday night's contest started a few minutes late after the Georgetown team bus broke down in nearby Oak Hill, Ohio, but the Tigers appeared no worse for the wear.
The visitors hit .349 for the match, tallying 40 kills and 11 errors in 83 swings.
GC scored five of the first six winners and never trailed in the opening set, while a kill by Krzysztof Kowalski capped a 4-1 spurt which erased an early 9-7 deficit and gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish.
Georgetown led from the outset of set three until four straight Rio points - culminating with a kill by senior Caden Donaldson (Jackson, OH) - tied the score at 22-all.
After the Tigers regained the lead on a service error by Rio freshman Jakub Tuz (Katovice, Poland), the RedStorm put themselves in a set point scenario with consecutive kills by junior Tyler Miller-Bross (Loveland, OH) and junior Sam Kaylor (Lewis Center, OH).
However, a service error by Kaylor knotted the score at 24-all and started a 4-1 match ending run by Georgetown.
Ryan Gunn had a team-best 12 kills and two service aces in the winning effort, while Kacper Dobrowolski finished with 32 assists and nine digs.
Michal Bak had two aces of his own for GC, while Tyree Wesley and Adam Szewinski had three block assists each.
Donaldson had a match-high 14 kills for Rio Grande, which finished with a .159 attack percentage (32 kills and 18 errors in 88 swings).
Sophomore Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 27 assists and junior Seth Mohr (Canton, OH) had eight digs for the RedStorm, while junior Cam Griffith (Columbus, OH) had two block assists. Kaylor and Miller-Bross had two service aces each.
